Insurance for Expats in Singapore

Overview

Singapore is often referred to as the Lion City, or the Garden City due to its densely populated island with tropical flora, parks and gardens. It is well-known for having both an exceptionally high level of healthcare and a thriving expat community. It’s a vibrant, clean and modern city-state. Its population of just under 5.7 million people is also one of the healthiest in the world. With low crime and pollution rates, and a culture that’s built on staying active and healthy, the average life expectancy in Singapore is just under 84 years. One of the highest in the world.

The Singaporean government takes the health of its people very seriously and constantly measures and regulates every aspect of the healthcare system to ensure it remains fair, effective and efficient. The Ministry of Health in Singapore also actively promotes healthy living with programmes dedicated to keeping people active and preventing illness. Singapore was ranked ninth in Money UK’s 2021 list of the healthiest countries in the world, which is based on obesity and pollution rates, food prices and life expectancy. It also came in at number eight on Bloomberg’s 2019 Global Health Index.

Health Insurance and Healthcare System in Singapore

When the World Health Organization published its rankings of the world’s healthcare systems in 2000, Singapore came sixth out of 191. Things haven’t changed much since then, with Singapore consistently appearing towards the top of other similar lists over the years.

Singapore boasts one of the most efficient healthcare systems globally, characterized by a mix of public and private healthcare services. Health care in Singapore can be very costly so you need to think about private health insurance. Many insurers class Singapore joint with Hong Kong as the second most expensive place in the world for medical treatment. Singapore offers world-class healthcare with both public and private facilities. The system is efficient, cost-effective, and well-regulated.

If you’re relocating to Singapore, expat medical insurance should be something that you should consider buying so you are covered instantly when you arrive.

Only citizens or permanent residents can access Singapore’s public health care system.

Which is why most expats in Singapore take out private health insurance or have it provided by their employer as part of their expat package. It is important to carefully check the terms of any health insurance policy to ensure that it provides sufficient cover to meet your specific needs. In Singapore, expatriates and foreigners will pay more anywhere than a Singapore citizen when it comes to health care treatment. Fees for services provided by doctors and hospitals in Singapore vary and may be difficult to predict. The only way to keep costs down and controllable is by purchasing expat health insurance while in Singapore.

Singapore boasts one of the most efficient healthcare systems globally, characterized by a mix of public and private healthcare services. The public healthcare system, primarily supported by the government, includes the MediShield Life insurance scheme, which offers basic coverage for significant medical costs, including hospital stays and essential treatments. MediSave, another public initiative, allows citizens and permanent residents to use their personal savings for medical expenses, including premium payments for health insurance.

  • What is the MediSave Scheme? It’s a national medical savings scheme in Singapore that helps individuals set aside part of their income for healthcare needs.
  • How can the funds be used? The funds can be used for personal or approved dependents’ hospitalization, day surgery, certain outpatient expenses, and healthcare needs in old age.
  • Are there any withdrawal limits? Yes, there are withdrawal limits set to ensure sufficient savings for basic healthcare needs in old age. These limits generally cover most charges at subsidized inpatient wards and outpatient treatments.

If you are moving to Singapore, expat health insurance is something you need to purchase to avoid paying yourself for a possible very large medical bill. If an expat living in Singapore is unable to pay a bill incurred at a medical facility the government reserves the right to revoke a visa enabling them to stay in Singapore. This can result in deportation from Singapore due to the country’s very strict laws.

The Singapore medical system is costly, however, it is also a highly rated health care system and many people have access to high-quality specialist medical treatment. Many medical insurance providers can help arrange full health cover plans suited to your individual needs, so that you and your family get the best quality treatment, however far you may be from home, and however long you plan to stay in Singapore.

Private Health Insurance in Singapore

Private health insurance is an essential consideration for expatriates living in Singapore. While the country’s public healthcare system, supported by MediShield Life and MediSave, provides a foundation of basic coverage, these public insurance schemes are primarily aimed at citizens and permanent residents. Expats, who may not have access to these benefits, often opt for private health insurance to ensure comprehensive medical coverage.

It’s important to note that the costs of private medical care are subject to market forces and can vary significantly. Therefore, individuals should carefully consider their healthcare needs and financial situation when choosing a private health insurance plan in Singapore.
