Health Insurance Hong Kong

30 Dec 2017

When moving to Hong Kong expat health insurance is an essential provision that everyone should research. Healthcare in Hong Kong is widely viewed as being amongst the best in the world but at the same time one of the most expensive making the need for medical insurance an essential requirement.

Hong Kong is home to 40 public hospitals, which are run by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority.  It is within these public hospitals that emergencies as well as basic and chronic care are treated. The government which means treatment from the government public hospital is quite affordable if you have a Hong Kong identification card heavily subsidizes the healthcare system in Hong Kong. ID cards are required for anyone staying in the country as a resident. Since the hospitals are run for the mass public, very long wait times, crowding, and communication issues are common complaints of expatriates when they go for treatment.

Doctors in Hong Kong in the private sector are readily available and offer excellent facilities and care. The private facilities have little or no waiting times and employ international staff to aid with the care and rehabilitation of their international patients. You will often be able to see them on the same day and do not always need to book an appointment beforehand. To see a doctor about a minor ailment or illness, consultations are available. Public doctors will usually have a wait until you can see them. Depending how luckily you re it can be either 24 hours or 7 days.

Prescriptions in Hong Kong can be obtained from a vast number of outlets and dispensary’s. Most over-the-counter and prescription drugs available in your home country are available in Hong Kong and may be covered by your Hong Kong expat health insurance.

Emergencies happen when we least expect them. To cater for these public hospitals all have 24-hour assistance available in case of an emergency. The emergency number in Hong Kong is 999, and an ambulance squad run by the government handles all requests. You will generally be transported to the closest public hospital.

A constant issue in Hong Kong is finding the right balance of cover that will be adequate to cover potentially huge medical expenses while finding cover that is still affordable. Many insurers now will price themselves out of the Hong Kong market over fear of paying large claims while others take a more pragmatic approach.

Some tips for selecting the right Hong Kong medical insurance for you:

  1. Make sure the cover fits your needs - Make sure you don’t pay for what you don’t need but at the same time ensure you have adequate cover to suitably cover you.
  2. Check existing users feedback – Trust and reliability to pay claims is everything to an insurer. See what people who use their plan say to ensure you get the right plan.
  3. Read the fine print – This may seem obvious but make sure you read the policy details and also ask any questions that relate to you individual circumstances.
